There have been many great female philosophers over the last two thousand years. The meaning of word philosopher is from the Greek word philo, which means love and sophia which means wisdom. Rather than chasing vanity, and a material life, these women had chosen that path of wisdom.

One of the greatest of female philosophers was Hypatia of Alexandria (ca. 370-415 AD) who was so intelligent, and had won most intellectual debated that she was eventually murdered by a crowd of crazy religious fanatics who happened to be Christians.

Some other famous women philosophers include Anne Conway (1631-1679), Mary Wollstonecraft(1759-1797), Sarah Margaret Fuller (1810-1850), Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831–1891), Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986), Ayn Rand (1905-1982), Hannah Arendt (1906-1975), Elizabeth Anscombe(1919-2001), Mary Warnock (born 1924) and Susan Haack (born 1945).
