Just two days after a video went viral showing a Saratoga County Sheriff’s Deputy, Shawn R. Glans violently slapping a man upside his head because he refused to give consent to having his car Saratoga Sheriff Shawn R. Glansillegally searched, the deputy caught on film was arrested today by his fellow colleagues for his crimes. Glans was also fired from the department.

Sheriff Zurlo: ‘Deputy Involved in Recent Video Charged and Arrested, No Longer Employed by Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office

Ballston Spa, NY: Saratoga County Sheriff Michael H. Zurlo announces the arrest of Shawn R. Glans following an investigation prompted by a video of a citizen encounter provided to the Sheriff’s Office on Friday evening November 7th 2014.

The Sheriff’s Office immediately launched a thorough investigation upon being notified of the existence of the video evidence. Investigators and administrators worked through the weekend and conducted multiple interviews with all parties involved. As a result, criminal charges have been filed against Shawn R. Glans for the following:

Official Misconduct – Penal Law 195.00 sub. 1- class A Misdemeanor

Harassment 2nd Degree – Penal Law 240.26 sub. 1 – Violation

Mr. Glans, accompanied by his attorney, was arraigned in the Town of Halfmoon Court by Justice Lester Wormuth, and released on his own recognizance to re-appear at a later date.

According to Sheriff Zurlo, “The actions of Sergeant Glans both as a police officer and a supervisor were completely inappropriate and unwarranted and not condoned in any fashion by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office. His actions served no purpose in the furtherance of the investigation that he was conducting and have greatly undermined the public trust of this agency. His actions in this incident are not a reflection of the quality, professional service provided by other members of the Sheriff’s Office on a daily basis. I wish to thank the members of the community who brought this matter to light and who participated openly and honestly in the investigation.”

Further, Shawn R. Glans is no longer employed by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office or the County of Saratoga having tendered his resignation prior to a statutorily required uspension/Termination Hearing which was scheduled for earlier today resulting in the closure of the internal investigation against him as well.
