33rd Degree Freemason, Manly P. Hall had said, “The ever-burning lamp of the alchemist which having burned thousands of years without fuel in the catacombs of Rome is but a symbol of this same spiritual fire within himself. In the picture we see the ever-burning lamp which was carried by the Initiate in his wandering.”
The Great Work of the Initiate is done within. It is the journey of discovering the self, and our true paths which is a unique experience to each and everyone of us.
It is a path we either travel up the Kundalini (central nervous system) to the light of human illumination to spark our hearts and minds into heavenly motion, or down the path of a beast to the darkness in the sea of ignorance on the yellow brick road we call life.
Manly Hall added, “It represents the spinal column of man, at the top of which is flickering a little blue and red flame. As the lamp of the ancients was fed and kept burning by the purest of olive oil, so man is transmitting within himself and cleansing in the laver of purification the life essences, which, when turned upward, provide fuel for the ever-burning lamp within himself.”
33 degrees up the spine to true human enlightenment is the path of the initiate on the immortal road of the Great Work. 33 degrees down the spinal column is the path most people unknowingly choose which is the ladder to the dark hell in the depths of human ignorance.
A lamp burns on the sides of the path for initiate to see the light. Some are simply blinded by the illumination.
