The meanings for Nimrod are “ the leopard who subdues,” “the leopard tamer,” the great hunter, and in Hebrew, spotted. He is often depicted in wearing a garment of a leopard. ORDO AB CHAO is Latin for “Order Out of Chaos or Order from Disorder.” This term was invented by Freemasons and is the actual motto of the 33rd Degree of Scottish Rite Freemasonry.
The name Scottish or Scotland is derived from the Latin, from Greek skotia, from feminine of skotios, dark, shadowy (from the shadow it casts), from skotos, darkness. In ancient Egypt there was a temple of Venus Scotia and it is said that the country of Scotland had derived its name from an Egyptian Pharaoh Queen named Scota. (more…)

“The Blazing Star in our Lodges represent Sirius. The Blazing Star has been regarded as an emblem of Omniscience, or the All Seeing Eye, which to the Ancients was the Sun.” – Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma.
The word “Seirios” is Greek for the English “Sirius” meaning “scorching” or “sparkling.” The ancients described the rising of the star Sirius to be associated with the scorching heat of the torrid days of midsummer we know of today as the “dog-days” for this reason. The spirit of Isis was said to be in Dog Star and the Greeks called Sirius the soul and water carrier of Isis. Initiates into the Secret Mysteries of Isis wore masks representing heads of dogs. In the Kyme Aretology, Isis declares that, “I am She that riseth in the Dog Star.” The description of her star in Hesiod’s Shield of Heracles described the influence of the magic of Isis, “Of these men the souls sink into the earth into the house of Hades, but their bones, once the skin has putrefied around them, putrefy in the dark earth under the influence of scorching Sirius.”

This is Albert Pikes’ 861 page volume of ‘lectures’ on the esoteric roots of Freemasonry, specifically the 32-degree Scottish Rite. Until 1964, this book was given to every Mason completing the 14th degree in the Southern jurisdiction of the US Scottish Rite Freemasons. Masonic lectures are standard oral presentations given during initiation to a new degree. Lectures provide background material for initiates and the discuss duties of the degree in general terms. They do not present details of the rituals, gestures, regalia, etc., for which one must consult other books on Masonry.
Pike states right off that half of the text is copied from other works. Unfortunately none of these quotes are properly cited, and in most cases it is only a shift in style which allows us to identify a quote. There are also lapses of fact and logic. So it would be a mistake to use this work as an authoritative source without additional research and critical thinking. That said, Morals and Dogma is a huge, rambling treasure-house of esoteric data, particularly on the Kabalah and ancient Mystery religions. Whether you just browse these pages or study it from one end to the other, this is a must-read book for anyone looking for long-lost knowledge.
