“Of all the nations of their time, the Phoenicians stood in the front rank. In the practical arts, as well as in the exact sciences, they were in their own wide sphere, without a competitor.

They were masons, dyers, glassblowers, workers in metal, and at the same time carpenters and shipbuilders, but beyond all other peoples, navigators and explorers, being the first to face the dangers of the open ocean, and make known to civilized nations, not only the remoter regions of Asia, Africa and Europe, but, as I think I shall succeed in demonstrating, the first to discover America, and the authors of the ancient and high civilization found there, which, up to this time, has been an unsolved enigma.”
